I'd Like to Thank the Little People
by Rev. Greg Powell (May 25 2011)
It is Paul's normal practice at the end of an epistle to give a few thank yous and honorable mentions to those who have helped him in ministry. At the end of Colossians, he essentially gives a speech of appreciation about several men, some familiar and some obscure. The types of people he thanks are the same types of people that you and I have to thank for contributing to our growth in the Lord. Are you thankful for the little people in your life who have made a big difference?
Don't Stir It Up
by Rev. Greg Powell (Apr 3 2011)
Series: Operation Solomon
We learn much about the nature of true romantic love from the often-avoided book of Song of Solomon. One of the principles that runs its course through the love story is that of the importance of letting true love blossom in God's time. We must be careful that we don't manufacture and stir up love prematurely. Singles must be reminded to be content, continue to develop their character, and focus on their calling as a single adult.
Open Doors
by Rev. Greg Powell (Mar 30 2011)
God often opens doors of opportunity for us to share the Gospel with lost people. This passage gives us principles that we can follow if we are to create more open doors in our lives. It is well to be prepared to lead someone to Christ if the event ever happens, but what about our prayer life concerning more doors to be opened? What can we learn from Paul who prayed for soulwinning opportunities when he was locked up in prison? This message on soulwinning reminds us to pray for open doors and live holy lives that cause more doors to be opened.
Leaders, Laborers, and Who's Really Looking
by Rev. Greg Powell (Mar 27 2011)
Since nearly everyone has or has had a job where they were either an employer or an employee, this practical passage of Scripture is very important. We are tempted in the work environment to think we are in it to please man, but the Bible tells us we have a higher authority we should be concerned with pleasing. The Lord is the one Who is observing our labor, whether secular or ministerial.
Hindrances to a Christ-Centered Home
by Rev. Greg Powell (Mar 2 2011)
There is no substitute for a Christ-centered home. No church or Christian school can replace what children need to get in the home from their parents. This message explores some attitudes and actions that hinder our homes from being completely Christ-centered. Our children's hearts are in the balance and they must see an authentic relationship with Christ demonstrated in their home.
Getting Dressed Every Morning
by Rev. Greg Powell (Feb 13 2011)
Paul gets very practical in this important section of Colossians 3. We are told to "mortify" the deeds of the old man, and then put on the clothes of Christlikeness. We must not forget the most important step of renewing our minds with the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. It really is as simple as getting dressed every morning -- put off, clean up, put on. What do you need to put off today?
Keeping It All In Focus
by Rev. Greg Powell (Nov 14 2010)
When the Christian life turns into a frantic mess, we can always zero in on the simple basics. Three things in Colossians 3 help us keep it in focus. If your perspective is skewed concerning your walk with God, try putting on the glasses of Scripture to see if your vision improves. Where are you looking, what are you loving, and for Whom are you living?
The Prison of Legalism
by Rev. Greg Powell (Nov 7 2010)
Most Christians agree that legalism is "bad" but don't really understand its implications and how serious it is. Legalism is attaching my spirituality to man-made rules and lists. Legalists think they are automatically more spiritual than other Christians because of their standards. To function this way is to live the Christian life in a prison cell of frustration. Standards are biblical and necessary, but we must guard against the attitude of arrogancy and the dangers of legalism in the process.
Using the Bible to Your Advantage
by Rev. Greg Powell (Oct 27 2010)
Series: I Really Want to Change
It should go without saying that the Bible is an essential tool in the process of us becoming more like Christ. Why is it, then, that we don't receive this book in the manner we are told to in the Bible? Why do we not research it and study it diligently? Why do we simply read with no intention of acting on what we read? This message will help you learn how to use the Bible to your advantage.
Sacrifice of Praise
by Rev. Greg Powell (Oct 24 2010)
Imagine that you owed someone $500,000 and they forgave you of that debt plus gave you $10 Million to spend as you desired. There was one stipulation though: you must travel the world, telling everyone you meet about this wonderful person and how amazing they are. Would you take that deal? Since that's probably never going to happen, what about doing that for God, whom you owed a great sin debt, but who forgave you and gave you so much more? Would you give your life to Him as a sacrifice of praise?
